THE AIM :

The reason behind the dustbin project was none other than my classmates. After showing me they would rather throw away trash on the floor than go and use the dustbin, the class had me thinking. So I decided to bring an interesting approach to cleaner classrooms.

After multiple mock-ups and trial designs (in Fusion 360), I selected the most convenient design for both students and faculty (cleaning and cost-wise). With the hoop, not only do the vibrant colours instantly attract people, they also encourage people to use the dustbins way more often.

A week after trialling two dustbins in different classrooms, I surveyed the janitors to see how effective the bins were. The results were positive, mostly highlighting how more items like wrappers, crushed paper, and pens ended up in the dustbin now rather than the floor. Class teachers also mentioned how this has encouraged one student from another to actually get up from their seat and dispose of any waste material.

Over the next 2 weeks, 10 more hoops were installed in various classrooms of different grades.

As of today, 40 classrooms have this design implemented. This has helped redefine cleanliness inside campus and forced better habits to students overtime.
